The federal Liberal party's youth wing is mounting a massive campaign in support of same-sex marriage for fear the legislation will be defeated in the Commons. Young Grits are overhauling their website to give Canadians who support the bill direct links to Liberal MPs. They're also launching a button campaign bearing the slogan "It's the Charter, stupid."
Young Liberals of Canada president Richard Diamond said his group will lobby delegates at an upcoming party convention to support the youth resolution urging all MPs to vote in favour of the same-sex marriage bill.
Diamond said the step up in lobbying is meant to counter highly organized groups pushing MPs to vote down the civil marriage act being debated before the Commons.
"Those opposed are much more organized in terms of writing letters to MPs and that kind of thing," he said. "Of course it's a worry but I think the momentum is definitely with us. I think that that's why we're getting active."
Diamond said young Liberals are whipping up a rally during the March 3-6 Ottawa policy convention with gay rights organization EGALE to keep the focus on the same-sex debate.
